Katie Taylor will fight in Croke Park after years of waiting, for what is billed to be her retirement fight.

After years of speculation and attempts, Matchroom and Eddie Hearn have delivered on bringing Katie Taylor to Ireland's biggest stadium. The two-weight world champion will fight in front of a potential crowd of 82,300 people on September 5.

The Irishwoman has been one of the major catalysts for growth in women's boxing over the last decade, recently partaking in a blockbuster trilogy against Amanda Serrano. September 5 will present her the opportunity to leave the sport on her own terms.

Katie Taylor vs. Flora Pili: Opportunity Arises

The fighter standing opposite Katie Taylor in September will be IBO Super Lightweight Champion Flora Pili. She may be the away fighter, but that does not mean it will be an easy night for the champion.

The French woman boasts a 12-0 record and is 11 years younger than her opponent, which may play a massive factor on the night.

The 28-year-old has had a successful career so far, making comfortable work of every opponent she has faced during her seven-year professional career, where many of her fights have taken place on home soil in France.

September will present the Pili with the biggest test of his career thus far, where she will take on one of the boxing greats against a hostile Irish crowd.

A Clash of Youth and Experience

The champion has been a professional for over a decade now and has been involved in many tough fights that may have taken a toll over the years. At 39 years old, she may have to produce a vintage Katie Taylor performance to get her hand raised. To find success she will need to utilise her invaluable ring-experience and patented toughness.

The Frenchwoman is in her prime years and has not yet experienced the highlight moments that her opponent has enjoyed, nor any competition of Taylor's level. However, if victorious in September, it will be a huge upset and the marquee night of her career so far.

While Katie Taylor has the chance to finish her story and go out on top as the Undisputed Super Lightweight Champion, Flora Pili will aim to crash the party and make a name for herself on one of the biggest nights in Irish sporting history.

Taylor's Early Boxing Journey

After winning Olympic gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Katie Taylor became a national hero in Ireland, inspiring young girls not just in her own country but all over the world.

When she turned professional in 2016, the women’s side of the sport looked vastly different from what we see today. There was little exposure for women’s boxing, but Taylor saw this as a new challenge after her decorated amateur career, embracing it as a new chapter and opportunity.

With the backing of promoter Eddie Hearn, the Irish woman had spotlight on some of the biggest cards in the UK, where she built both her experience and a fanbase that was now growing outside of Ireland. In just her seventh bout, she won the WBA Lightweight Championship at the Principality Stadium in October 2017.

Taylor Makes her Mark at Lightweight

As her career grew from strength to strength, she started working her way up fight cards. In June 2019, she co-mained Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz fight at Madison Square Garden. Taylor accomplished something every boxer dreams of and became the undisputed lightweight champion by defeating Delphine Persoon.

Although this was a marquee moment for Taylor, controversy surrounded the fight as it was a closely fought battle in which fans could not split the pair. Calls for a rematch emerged.

The following year, she silenced the doubters by winning the rematch decisively, with many fans feeling that she had reached the mountaintop.

In April 2022, Taylor defied odds once again as she was one half of boxing’s first women’s main event at Madison Square Garden. It was an incredible, hard-fought battle against Amanda Serrano and one for the ages, with the decision going the Irishwoman’s way.

Taylor has hosted a remarkable career in which she suffered only one defeat to Chantelle Cameron, a loss that she later avenged in a rematch that saw her become an undisputed champion in two-weight classes. She later had two more bouts with her most vicious rival, Amanda Serrano, winning both contests.

Taylor is now regarded as one of the greatest women boxers of all time, while also serving as a role model for the next generation.
