Abdullah Mason returns to Cleveland for the first defence of his WBO lightweight title as unbeaten late replacement Albert Bell looks to derail one of boxing's brightest young stars. Here's our full fight preview and keys to victory.

The 22-year-old makes the first defence of his WBO lightweight title in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, this weekend with the opportunity to build on what has been an emphatic start to his professional career.

The rise of a potential superstar

The champion may have always been destined for boxing. Mason comes from a fighting family, with four of his brothers also competing as professional boxers. Growing up in such a competitive environment has helped push each of them to improve.

He enjoyed a successful amateur career, winning national championships before turning professional at just 17 years old. The decision reflected the belief trainers and promoters already had in his talent, with Top Rank signing him before his 18th birthday.

The sharp southpaw quickly became one of boxing's standout prospects due to his high knockout percentage and exceptional hand speed. As his career has progressed, he has continued to showcase his development, adding new layers to his arsenal with each fight.

After beating veteran Jeremia Nakathila in a dominant performance, Mason earned the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBO lightweight title. His opponent was the unbeaten Sam Noakes in a clash between two of the sport's brightest young talents, and the bout did not disappoint.

It was a back-and-forth encounter in which both men enjoyed success and showed incredible courage. Mason dug deep and, after 12 hard-fought rounds, earned a unanimous decision victory.

This weekend, he returns home for the first defence of his world title. Although he may already be looking towards future unification fights, there is still one man standing in his way.

Can Bell spoil the homecoming?

With Joe Cordina withdrawn from the bout, Albert Bell steps in as a late replacement with little time to prepare but plenty of experience. Could he turn Mason's dream night into a nightmare?

The 33-year-old, dubbed "Prince", is unbeaten and presents a tricky puzzle to solve. Bell utilises plenty of movement and is most comfortable fighting off the back foot.

While he may lack Mason's explosiveness, his ring IQ and style can cause significant problems for fighters who are not prepared. The challenger is a test that should not be taken lightly.

Although he is a late replacement, Bell was already deep into training camp preparing to face Andy Cruz on July 18. This opportunity is one every boxer dreams of, and Bell's awkward style may be enough to frustrate the young champion.

Keys to victory

The champion is offensively very sharp and throws combinations at blistering speed. He will need disciplined footwork to consistently land those shots on Bell, and when Mason hurts his opponents, they very rarely hear the final bell.

With an 85% knockout rate, Mason will be looking to finish the fight early, having recorded only three knockout victories beyond the fifth round. However, it may be his composure that proves most important, as Bell is likely to spend much of the contest fighting on the back foot.

For the title to change hands, Bell will have to disrupt Mason and prevent him from settling into his rhythm. Although he does his best work on the back foot, he must remain defensively alert to Mason's explosive offence. If Bell can control the pace and frustrate the young champion, the fight could play directly into the "Prince's" hands.
