Lone’er Kavanagh aims to prove himself in Moreno clash
“This is my life, it’s my way of life. I’ve done this since I was young, and I plan on being a champion. I’ll do whatever it takes to get there.”
Lone’er Kavanagh believes he has something to prove when he steps into Mexico City.
The flyweight prospect will be taking on former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno on February 28.
Coming off his first professional loss, yet one that gained him his spot in the rankings, Kavanagh believes he needs to prove he belongs.
He said: “I did say that going into the UFC, I would love to be ranked after my first year in the organisation.
Luckily, I was, and I’m very thankful for that. But now it’s just proving that I belong here, and that’s what I want to do in my next fight.”
Kavanagh lost his last fight to flyweight staple Charles Johnson, who KO’d the Brit inside R2.
After dominating the American in the 1st round, a right hook from Johnson in the 2nd knocked him down and led to the finish.
Five months on, and he believes he has learnt a lot from the loss.
“My last fight didn’t go the way I wanted it to. I messed up, I made a mistake, and now I’m never going to make that mistake again.
It opened up a lot of stuff to work on. I always say that the best fight is when you win and learn. Unfortunately, I lost, but I learnt a lot.”
Now fighting on short notice, both Moreno and the relentless elevation of Mexico City have Kavanagh’s full attention ahead of the 28th.
He steps in as a replacement for Asu Almabayev, who withdrew due to injury.
A win against one of the biggest names the division has ever produced will undoubtedly do wonders for the GBTT alumni, hopefully propelling him towards his end goal.
