Simeon Powell promises “violent but smooth” performance against Emiliano Sordi at PFL Sioux Falls

Simeon Powell returns after layoff
Simeon Powell is back after nearly a year away from the cage.
“Smooth” will make his return at PFL Sioux Falls on Saturday, May 2, where he will take on Emiliano Sordi at the Sanford Pentagon.
We spoke to Powell ahead of his fight at Titans Gym, High Wycombe. He told us that after his long layoff, he is ready to show the best version of himself to date.
He said: “Everyone’s got to tune in. Everyone’s going to be in for a tasty night. It’s definitely going to be the sharpest, most violent version of myself - so you’re in for a treat.”
The layoff has not been an easy one for London’s Powell, who admitted that his time away from the cage has come with its own challenges.
“It’s difficult, especially as a professional athlete, this is what we do as a job,” he said.
“If you’re not getting out there frequently, it’s hard. Mentally, more than anything. But me? I just adapted and practiced the art of patience. I’ve seen a lot of growth in myself through that. You’ll be seeing the older, more mature version of me.”
Only 27, he made his debut in August 2021 and has since gone 11-2 as a professional. During this time he has been a frequent competitor in the PFL, competing in two of their light-heavyweight tournaments.
After suffering a decision loss to jiu-jitsu ace Antônio Carlos Jr. last June, Powell says he is now prioritising composure over chasing outcomes. Citing patience as his biggest change, he believes it will show in this performance.
He told us: “Patience. Just believing and trusting in the process. Keeping faith in God and believing that everything happens for a reason. That you are on the right path.
“I do have goals, big future ambitions, but I have gotten carried away with that in the past. It actually hindered my performances as I put too much pressure on myself, because I was looking ahead. Now I just take every fight as they come.”
Emiliano Sordi brings experience and momentum
A battle tested veteran of the sport, Emiliano Sordi (26-13-1) enters the fight on a four fight winning streak. His most recent win came against England’s Tom Breese, who he submitted in the very first round.
Sordi has a long history in the PFL, going 7-4-1 in the organisation since 2018. In 2019 he won their light heavyweight championship and secured the $1,000,000 prize. The Argentinian will return for the first time since 2022.
Although noting his age, Powell recognises the challenge in front of him and showed respect for his opponent.
He said: “He (Sordi) is solid everywhere. He comes from a good gym, Kill Cliff. I actually trained there a bit for my last camp. Nothing but respect for his team, his skillset. I just think it’s my time now.”
Fight expectations and what comes next
“Smooth” believes his youth will play a key role in the fight, with his pace expected to be a major factor over three rounds. A finish would mark a strong return and set him back on course following his last defeat.
“I think I’m going to put a pace on him that he won’t be able to keep up with.
“Once I finish him in spectacular style, I’d love that rematch against Shoeface (Carlos Jr.) I want to get that back and see a title fight after that for sure. But anyone can get it.”
PFL Sioux Falls will be available to watch in the UK through a DAZN subscription and will take place on May 2.
