UFC Abu Dhabi Preview: Magomed Ankalaev vs Khalil Rountree Jr – Who Moves Closer To A Title Shot?

With the UFC light heavyweight division currently in limbo, Magomed Ankalaev and Khalil Rountree Jr meet in Abu Dhabi knowing a statement victory could move them one step closer to title contention. We preview a pivotal clash between two of the division's most dangerous contenders.

THE LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT LANDSCAPE

After Carlos Ulberg snatched a dramatic victory from the jaws of defeat by knocking out Jiri Prochazka to win the vacant title at UFC 327, the light heavyweight division has been left in limbo due to the torn ACL he suffered in his right knee. Although the UFC has yet to make a decision on the title picture, the situation presents opportunities for the division's top contenders to establish themselves as the next challenger.

On July 25, the UFC returns to Abu Dhabi, with both Magomed Ankalaev and Khalil Rountree Jr looking to throw their names back into the mix after suffering recent defeats.

MAGOMED ANKALAEV LOOKS TO REBOUND

When the UFC signs a fighter from the mountains of Dagestan, comparisons to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev are inevitable. However, Ankalaev arrived with a different style. While he possessed elite wrestling credentials, he also showcased impressive striking ability as he quietly built a nine-fight unbeaten streak.

That dominant run earned him a title shot, but the opportunity ended in a disappointing draw.

Ankalaev eventually fought his way back into contention and made himself impossible to ignore. At UFC 313, he defeated Alex Pereira, out striking the Brazilian to capture the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

The rematch could not have gone much worse for the Russian. He was stopped in the opening round and his post-fight explanations for the defeat did not sit well with some fans.

Now returning in Abu Dhabi, where he is expected to enjoy significant crowd support, Ankalaev will be looking to bounce back from only the second loss of his professional career. At his best, he remains one of the most complete fighters in the division.

KHALIL ROUNTREE'S ROAD BACK TO CONTENTION

The 36-year-old has experienced a remarkable journey both inside and outside the cage. Unlike Ankalaev, Rountree entered the UFC without the same level of expectation.

Early in his career, he struggled to build momentum, but a move to Thailand proved transformative. Immersing himself in the culture, lifestyle and striking traditions helped elevate his game, and he gradually developed into a genuine contender at 205 pounds.

Rountree challenged Alex Pereira at UFC 308 and enjoyed moments of success before ultimately falling short. Despite the defeat, many fans and media members felt his stock had actually risen, having exceeded expectations against one of the division's most feared champions.

He now enters this fight following a loss to Jiri Prochazka in a contest where he appeared in control before being drawn into a chaotic battle that favoured the Czech veteran.

His fight IQ remains one of his greatest strengths, and he understands that keeping the fight standing likely offers his clearest route to victory.

HIGH STAKES IN ABU DHABI

On July 25, a major opportunity presents itself for both men.

With the light heavyweight division currently lacking clarity at the top, a statement victory could place either Ankalaev or Rountree firmly back in the title conversation.

Both fighters possess elite skill sets, and with the division's future uncertain, the outcome of this contest could have significant implications for the championship picture.
