Bam Rodriguez Stops Antonio Vargas To Become Three-Division World Champion
Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez made history in Arizona on Saturday night, stopping Antonio Vargas in the sixth round to capture the WBA Bantamweight World Championship and become a three-division world champion.
Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez became a three-division world champion on Saturday night, stopping Antonio Vargas in the sixth round to capture the WBA Bantamweight World Championship in Arizona and continue his rise amongst boxing's pound-for-pound elite.
Making his first appearance at bantamweight, Rodriguez entered the contest with plenty of questions surrounding how he would cope with naturally bigger opposition. Early on, Vargas gave fans reason to believe those questions were justified. The reigning champion looked comfortable during the opening rounds, using his size and physicality to compete with Rodriguez and enjoying moments of success as he looked to disrupt the challenger before he could establish his rhythm.
Rodriguez answers bantamweight questions
For a time, it appeared as though Vargas might be able to make life uncomfortable for one of boxing's most accomplished fighters. Rodriguez was forced to work for his opportunities and found himself dealing with a different type of challenge than many of the opponents he had dominated at the lower weights. However, as the fight progressed, a familiar pattern began to emerge.
Rodriguez gradually settled into the contest, finding his timing and beginning to dictate the exchanges. The combinations became sharper, the movement more effective. The pressure steadily increased as Vargas was forced to spend more time reacting than attacking. While the champion continued to have his moments, Rodriguez increasingly looked like the fighter in control.
The turning point in Bam Rodriguez vs Antonio Vargas arrived in the fifth round when Rodriguez scored the first knockdown of the fight. Vargas rose and attempted to respond, but the momentum had shifted decisively. Sensing the opportunity, Rodriguez continued pressing forward and carried that momentum into the sixth.
A sharp finishing sequence eventually forced the referee to intervene, ending Vargas' title reign and confirming Rodriguez as a world champion in a third weight division. It was another impressive addition to an already remarkable resume and perhaps the clearest indication yet that Rodriguez's success can continue at bantamweight.
The victory adds another world title to Rodriguez's growing collection and is likely to further strengthen calls for the biggest fights available in and around the division. More importantly, it answered the biggest question surrounding the event itself. After conquering flyweight and super flyweight, Rodriguez has now announced his arrival at 118 pounds in emphatic fashion.
Cardenas settles the score
Earlier in the evening, Arturo Cardenas emerged victorious in his rematch with Jordan Martinez, finally separating himself after the pair fought to a split draw in their first meeting earlier this year.
As expected, the contest proved competitive throughout, with both men enjoying success during the exchanges. However, Cardenas' work ultimately proved enough to secure the decision and retain his WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight title. Following the draw in February, it was a result that provided a clearer conclusion to one of the most evenly matched rivalries on the card.
Turhan remains unbeaten
In the co-feature, Elif Nur Turhan successfully defended her IBF lightweight world title with a unanimous decision victory over fellow unbeaten fighter Gabriela Tellez.
Tellez entered the bout looking to claim a world title in her biggest fight to date, but Turhan's championship experience proved decisive across the ten rounds. The victory allowed the champion to maintain her unbeaten record and continue her rise within the lightweight division.
Action throughout the undercard
Elsewhere on the card, several prospects continued their development with important victories. Ronny Alvarez remained unbeaten with a win over Filip Stankovic, while Trini Ochoa added another victory to his record against Cristian Perez Hernandez.
Hector Beltran was also successful on the night, defeating Shaquile Felicia, while Xechal Xavier Esquivel earned a victory over Rayshawn Taylor as both fighters looked to build momentum in their respective divisions.
While the championship bouts naturally commanded the majority of the attention, the undercard provided a valuable platform for a number of emerging names looking to establish themselves under the Matchroom banner. Several fighters left Arizona with their unbeaten records intact and their positions strengthened heading into the second half of the year.
In the end, however, the lasting image from the evening was Rodriguez standing with another world title around his waist. Questions surrounded his move to bantamweight before the opening bell. Six rounds later, Bam Rodriguez had answered every question surrounding his move to bantamweight, stopping Antonio Vargas to become a three-division world champion and further cement his place among boxing's pound-for-pound elite.
