Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua officially confirmed for December 11 in Cardiff
Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will finally meet on December 11 at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, with the long-awaited all-British heavyweight showdown streaming live globally on Netflix.
After more than a decade of speculation, failed attempts and constant talk of a potential battle, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will finally share the ring.
The all-British heavyweight blockbuster that has been in the works for months on end has officially been confirmed for Friday, December 11, with Cardiff's Principality Stadium set to play host to the long-awaited clash.
The event will be broadcast globally on Netflix, with subscribers able to watch at no additional cost.
After a ridiculously long wait, two of Britain's most recognisable names, not only in boxing but in sport, will finally meet in the ring with the world's attention upon them.
Fury vs Joshua finally becomes reality
The fight will be promoted through a collaboration between The Ring and Dana White's ZUFFA Boxing, with Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh also playing a key role in finally bringing the two heavyweights together.
Alalshikh described the matchup as two of the best heavyweights of their generation finally meeting in the ring.
“This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history; I am very happy to make this fight happen for the fans.”
Both heavyweights enter off victories
Both Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury will enter the Welsh capital in December off the back of wins against Kristian Prenga and Mariusz Wach, adding another victory to their respective 30-4 and 36-2-1 records.
Facing adversity in the opening round, Joshua recovered to knock out his Albanian opponent in the second round of their contest in Jeddah back in July.
Fury's last outing saw him stop Mariusz Wach in the seventh round of their duel in Thailand, with the fight not being aired for the public to view.
Fury vs Joshua heads to Cardiff
The location of this fight, Cardiff, adds another layer of history to an already remarkable occasion.
The Principality Stadium has hosted some of the country's biggest boxing events, including two fights involving Joshua, as well as two fights featuring legendary unbeaten Welshman ‘The Pride of Wales’, Joe Calzaghe.
Unfortunately, because of the massive global interest in the bout, spectators inside the stadium on the evening and those watching from home will have to stay up until the early hours of the morning, with the global Netflix broadcast resulting in a later start time for British fans.
For British boxing fans, however, the significance of finally seeing Fury and Joshua share the ring is likely to outweigh the unusual start time.
This fight has been talked about for around a decade, with numerous attempts to bring the two heavyweights together falling apart as both forged their own paths through the top level of the sport.
It’s finally time to see who the best British heavyweight of their generation is.
Update – September 27: Promotional dispute emerges after Fury vs Joshua announcement
The promotion of Fury vs Joshua has since become a point of contention. The initial announcement stated that Turki Alalshikh's The Ring and Dana White would collaborate to promote the event. However, Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn has disputed White's involvement, claiming the agreement surrounding the fight prevents the ZUFFA Boxing figurehead from being involved in the promotion.
White responded following ZUFFA Boxing 11 in London, insisting that he remains involved in the fight, while the exact nature of his role remains unclear. Tyson Fury has also claimed the disagreement has placed the long-awaited showdown in jeopardy, although the December 11 bout remains officially announced at the time of writing.
