Amari Jones vs Vincenzo Gualtieri Preview: Is Amari Jones the Future of the Middleweight Division?

Amari Jones faces former IBF champion Vincenzo Gualtieri in the toughest test of his career. Can the unbeaten prospect revive boxing’s middleweight division?

A New Hope for Boxing’s Middleweight Division

The 160-pound division has historically been one of boxing’s most glamorous weight classes, featuring elite fighters such as Sugar Ray Robinson, Carlos Monzón and Marvin Hagler. In recent years, however, the division has struggled to capture the public’s attention, with few emerging stars. Oakland’s own Amari Jones is beginning to make a name for himself.

The 24-year-old is backed by Golden Boy Promotions. His good friend and one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best, Devin Haney, has spoken very highly of Jones, which has encouraged more fans to follow his career. He has yet to disappoint. Jones has made relatively easy work of his first 16 professional fights, and only two opponents have made it to the final bell.

Vincenzo Gualtieri Represents a Major Step Up

Although he has looked devastating in the first five years of his career, critics will argue that the competition has not been particularly impressive. That will change when he faces Germany’s Vincenzo Gualtieri, who boasts a decorated record of 25 wins with only one defeat. That loss came against unified middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.

Although Gualtieri fell short at the highest level, he has responded well since that defeat, winning his next four fights in dominant fashion. The 33-year-old is a former IBF middleweight champion, which highlights that this is no easy step up for Jones.

Virgil Hunter’s Influence on Jones’ Development

Oakland’s rising prospect transitioned from the amateur ranks after winning the 2019 Youth National Championship and, in late 2024, took his training to the next level by linking up with renowned trainer Virgil Hunter, who has coached multiple world champions, most notably Andre Ward and Amir Khan.

This will be the fourth fight since Jones and Hunter began working together, although the pair had worked together previously. Hunter himself said, “It’s an honour,” which must be surreal for the young prospect to hear from one of boxing’s most respected trainers.

Can Amari Jones Become Boxing’s Next Middleweight Star?

The soft-spoken American maintains a disciplined lifestyle and does not engage in trash talk, which may discourage some casual fans from paying attention. However, he has all the potential to compete in major fights, and if boxing fans get behind him, he may well be a superstar in the making.

The former world champion will not be the fan favourite in San Jose on Friday night, but there is no doubt Gualtieri will look to silence the American crowd and establish himself on the world stage once again.

Has America found a rising star in the middleweight division, or will the German veteran produce an upset that shakes the boxing world?
