An Irresistible Force Meets an Unyielding Defense: Youssef Zalal Takes on Aljamain Sterling at UFC Vegas 116
Youssef Zalal will look to achieve the biggest moment of his career this weekend when he takes on former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling in the main event of UFC Vegas 116.
The two featherweight contenders will throw down over five rounds at the Meta APEX this coming Saturday, with massive divisional implications and a historic grappling narrative taking centre stage.
The Submission Streak
Zalal (18-5-1) will headline a UFC event for the first time in his career. "The Moroccan Devil" has been an absolute revelation since his return to the Octagon in early 2024. Riding a spectacular five-fight win streak, he has rapidly put the 145-pound division on notice by dismantling a gauntlet of respected veterans.
What makes Zalal's recent run so terrifying is the sheer ruthlessness and variety of his finishing ability. The streak began in March 2024 with a slick second-round rear-naked choke over Billy Quarantillo. He followed that up five months later by dispatching Jarno Errens with another rear-naked choke in the first round.
Stepping up in competition, Zalal proved his grappling could translate against elite calibre opponents. In November 2024, he caught Jack Shore in a flawless second-round arm-triangle choke.
After grinding out a hard-fought unanimous decision over Calvin Kattar in early 2025, Zalal scored the biggest win of his career at UFC 320 last October, submitting former interim title challenger Josh Emmett with a devastating armbar in just 98 seconds.
Averaging 1.46 submissions per 15 minutes, Zalal is now just two submissions away from tying the legendary Charles Oliveira for the all-time featherweight division record.
A win this weekend, particularly a stoppage against a former champion, would undeniably cement him as a challenger to the featherweight belt.
The Unbroken Shield
Standing across from him is a man whose grappling pedigree is etched in UFC history. Aljamain Sterling (25-5) is hunting for a title shot at featherweight, and an impenetrable submission defense has been the bedrock of his storied career.
Despite facing a murderer's row of elite grapplers and champions across two weight classes, Sterling has never been submitted in his professional MMA career. During his reign at 135 pounds, he neutralized the ground games of Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, Petr Yan, and T.J. Dillashaw.
Let's not forget, Sterling is a lethal submission artist in his own right, famously choking out Cory Sandhagen in just 88 seconds back in 2020.
Since moving up to 145 pounds, Sterling has gone 2-1 against the top tier of the division. He debuted with a dominant unanimous decision over Calvin Kattar at the historic UFC 300. After dropping a grinding unanimous decision to undefeated wrestling powerhouse Movsar Evloev at UFC 310, Sterling bounced back.
Last August he took on Brian Ortega, scoring a five-round unanimous decision victory. Surviving 25 minutes on the mat with "T-City" without getting tapped, Sterling proved his submission defense is nearly impenetrable.
"Funk Master" knows the stakes. Sterling has publicly stated that shutting down a highly-ranked, evasive submission specialist like Zalal is the key to making his championship case undeniable. Unfazed by the Moroccan's momentum, Sterling has predicted he will be the one finding a rear-naked choke in the third round.
The Meta APEX Crucible
Adding fuel to the fire is the battleground itself, the bout will take place in the smaller Octagon at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas.
This tight environment has notoriously limited the footwork of esteemed fighters in the past. Zalal’s notable lateral movement will be put to the test, with the smaller Octagon favouring Sterling’s pressure-heavy wrestling and chain takedown approach.
For Zalal, the question is whether he can find the neck or a limb in the inevitable scrambles against the fence. For Sterling, the goal is to smother the contender, drown him in deep waters, and prove his championship window is still wide open.
