George Hardwick headlines Cage Warriors 209 in Newcastle as the former lightweight champion faces late replacement Nicolas Sávio. Here's everything you need to know ahead of Saturday night's action, including the key fights across the main card.

Cage Warriors returns to the Northeast this weekend as Newcastle's Vertu Motors Arena plays host to Cage Warriors 209. Middlesbrough's own George Hardwick tops the bill as he takes on Brazil's Nicolas Sávio, with the former lightweight champion aiming to continue his climb back into title contention.

George Hardwick vs Nicolas Sávio headlines Cage Warriors 209

Hardwick was originally scheduled to face Gavin Hughes, but the Irishman's withdrawal has seen Sávio step in on short notice to fill the main event slot in this lightweight contest.

Despite the late change in opponent, Hardwick will still be aiming to build momentum and earn another shot at the title after losing his gold in the first round to Daniel Konrad at Cage Warriors 199.

His opponent, Sávio, enters the bout with a professional record of 13-5 and arrives on a two-fight winning streak, most recently earning a decision victory over Vinicius Alves in December before claiming the vacant MFC featherweight title with a win over Erick Maia in Brazil this April.

For Sávio, it will mark his Cage Warriors debut, as well as his first professional fight in the UK, stepping in as a late replacement to headline against a former champion on home soil in Newcastle.

Hardwick, meanwhile, is no stranger to high-pressure nights, having captured the Cage Warriors lightweight title in a war with Kyle Driscoll during his rise to the top of the division.

Pietrzak and Ariano renew their rivalry

In the evening's co-main event, someone's perfect record must go as Norbert Pietrzak and Nell Ariano square off.

Both men are coming off stoppage victories in the light-heavyweight division, with Pietrzak boasting a professional record of 3-0, while his French opponent enters at 5-0.

The pair are familiar with one another, having previously met in the amateur ranks back in 2023. Neither man could get the better of the other after an accidental head clash from Ariano in the second round caused a large cut above Pietrzak's eye, forcing the referee to rule the bout a no contest.

With the controversial ending now firmly in the rear-view mirror, which of these two men will hand the other their first professional defeat?

Oscar Ownsworth returns

Further down the card, Oscar Ownsworth returns to Cage Warriors to take on Gabriele Galluccio in a 150lbs catchweight bout.

Fighting out of Sheffield, Ownsworth has endured a difficult couple of years, failing to get his hand raised since the summer of 2023 after suffering three consecutive decision defeats. That run finally came to an end last month with a submission victory over Edward Walls in Finland.

This will be Ownsworth's third appearance under the bright yellow Cage Warriors lights, with his previous outings coming against Bellator veteran Tim Wilde and the highly regarded Adam Cullen.

For Galluccio, the Italian has been on a hot streak, remaining unbeaten in his last six bouts. You have to go all the way back to June 2019 to find his last MMA defeat on the Italian regional scene.

He last competed at Cage Warriors 194, where he took Ireland's Ryan Shelley to a decision in his home country.

If the fight hits the mat, will Galluccio's superior ground game be enough to secure another victory, or can Ownsworth find success on the feet?

Fraser Paterson faces a stern test

Down the card, Fraser Paterson makes just the second walk of his professional career as he takes on 2014 Youth Olympic wrestling silver medallist Dimitrii Ceacusta in a middleweight contest.

Paterson is coming off a successful professional debut, stopping Geoff Pavey in the first round with ground and pound.

Ceacusta is an accomplished wrestler who doesn't necessarily rely solely on his grappling to get the job done. The Moldovan is 2-0 as a professional, with both victories coming inside the opening round.

Last time out, against Mert Can Çayır on the Serbian regional scene, Ceacusta smothered his Turkish opponent on the way to another dominant finish.

Will Paterson's all-round game be enough to counter the Moldovan's elite wrestling pedigree?

Scogna meets Henrique

Another main card contest sees Damiano Scogna take on Rony Henrique in a bantamweight bout.

Scogna is now 4-1 in Cage Warriors after his victory at Cage Warriors 201, where he earned a standing TKO win over Lucas Rodrigues.

Henrique enters the contest fresh from a split-decision defeat to Next Gen's Nathan Fletcher at Cage Warriors 207 and will be looking to secure his first victory in the famous yellow gloves.

Should Henrique choose to keep the fight standing, will Scogna be able to pick his opponent apart with his striking, or will the Brazilian drag the contest into deep waters on the mat?

Pro debuts open the main card

Opening the main card is a lightweight contest between two men making their professional MMA debuts as Stevie Lee takes on Vladimir Stanca.

Stanca, a young submission specialist from Moldova, will be hoping his ground game is enough to have his hand raised against Lee, whose unbeaten amateur career showcased a variety of different finishing methods.

Lee, a proud Geordie, has claimed titles across the regional amateur scene and will be hoping those experiences are enough to secure victory in front of his home crowd.
