UFC Vegas 118 Preview: Belal Muhammad Returns Against Rising Contender Gabriel Bonfim
Former UFC champion Belal Muhammad returns in the UFC Vegas 118 main event against rising Brazilian contender Gabriel Bonfim. With major welterweight rankings implications on the line, both men enter Saturday's clash needing a statement victory.
Former UFC Welterweight Champion Belal Muhammad (24-5, 1 NC) returns to the Octagon at UFC Vegas 118 looking to defend his number five ranking and get back to winning ways.
He comes face-to-face with rising prospect Gabriel Bonfim (19-1) at the Meta Apex this weekend, with the welterweight division's top 15 potentially set for a major shake-up.
BELAL MUHAMMAD LOOKING TO SNAP LOSING STREAK
The Chicago native enters UFC Vegas 118 on the first two-fight losing streak of his UFC career, having suffered unanimous decision defeats to Jack Della Maddalena and Ian Machado Garry.
'Remember The Name' has not tasted victory since his welterweight title win at UFC 304, where he silenced the Manchester crowd by defeating Leon Edwards.
The 38-year-old is aiming to keep his place among the division's elite and remain within touching distance of title contention. However, Muhammad will likely need a statement performance to strengthen his case for another run at UFC gold.
While Muhammad has rarely finished opponents throughout his MMA career, he has consistently relied on his wrestling, pressure and cardio to secure comfortable decision victories against elite competition.
GABRIEL BONFIM CHASING WELTERWEIGHT BREAKTHROUGH
The Brazilian enters the contest riding a four-fight winning streak and has enjoyed an impressive run, picking up victories by decision, knockout and submission to establish himself inside the welterweight top 15.
The number 11-ranked contender headlined an Apex card in his last outing, stopping Randy Brown in the second round to maintain his position in the rankings.
A victory over a former UFC champion would likely propel Bonfim into the top five and establish him as a genuine title contender at 170 pounds.
Bonfim has only gone the distance twice in his professional career, so the 28-year-old will likely be searching for another finish as he attempts to overcome Muhammad's experience and durability.
OTHER KEY FIGHTS ON THE UFC VEGAS 118 CARD
In the co-main event, Brendan Allen (26-7) looks to defend his position in the middleweight rankings as he takes on Edmen Shahbazyan (16-5), who is aiming to force his way back into the top 15.
Fares Ziam (18-4) is also looking to strengthen his place in the lightweight rankings as the Frenchman squares off against rising Australian prospect Tom Nolan (10-1).
Bryce Mitchell (18-4) continues his campaign against short-notice opponent Santiago Luna (8-0), who is searching for his second victory of 2026.
Unbeaten Polish prospect Iwo Baraniewski (8-0) returns to action against Junior Tafa (7-5) in the opening fight of the main card.
UFC Vegas 118 could prove to be a defining moment for both Muhammad and Bonfim. Muhammad is desperate to halt his losing streak and remain relevant in the title picture, while Bonfim has the opportunity to break into the welterweight elite. With several ranked fighters also featured on the card, Saturday night's event could reshape multiple UFC divisions heading into UFC Freedom 250 just one week later.
